We tell you what makes a bag ‘designer’

Designer bags have become big business and they often bolster labels’ finances, if not directly fund the label entirely, particularly those that produce haute couture.  But what makes a bag ‘designer’?

Some may say it’s the design, others may cite luxury materials, be it leather, suede, metallic or exotic skins.  Or perhaps it’s exclusivity, in the form of the brand, the shopping experience and the price.  Ultimately it’s a tantalising mix of all of these things.

It’s proven difficult to find a definitive definition of a designer bag, however the Collins English Dictionary for designer clothing could easily be applied to bags, “designer clothing is fashionable or luxury clothing made by, or carrying the label of, a well-known fashion designer”.

Our style influences come in many forms and evolve throughout our lives as we create our own unique style.  We firmly believe that a designer bag can elevate any outfit whether we’re popping to the supermarket or out for a fancy meal.

What’s so special about a Jimmy Choo clutch bag?

Jimmy Choo accessorised red carpet dressing before it became “a thing” and remains a favourite with celebrities and the style savvy.

Those of us who watched Sex and The City will fondly remember Carrie’s despair as she, “lost her Choo” whilst running for the Staten Island Ferry.  Jimmy Choo was a brand to covet and a pair of Jimmy Choos or one of its bags was an aspiration.

We love Jimmy Choo.  Why not check out the Jimmy Choo Tube Clutch in leopard print on our site?

What’s so great about indigo?

We find indigo is such a versatile colour.  So much so that we’re surprised more bags aren’t indigo coloured.

But what colour is indigo?  It has been described as a colour located between the (primary) blue and the colour violet of the Red Green Blue colour wheel.

Thankfully Victoria Beckham recently produced one of her large zip pouches in indigo leather.  The colour is accentuated with a delicate cut-out detail on the front.

What is it about glitter and gold?

There’s something magical about glitter and gold.  We’re like magpies and love a bit of sparkle particularly for a special occasion.

Our multi-coloured glittery Anya Hindmarch Valorie clutch is just perfect for a touch of sparkle.  We’ve worn her to weddings, parties, the races and on nights out, although we’re sure she’d look just as amazing on a trip to the supermarket.  There’s something about a bit of glitter that makes us feel somewhat glamorous and sophisticated.

Have you seen our Kate Spade Kaley bag in her golden glory?  Her seemingly simply design and subtle branding should not be underestimated.  We believe there is much beauty in minimalism and she adds glamour to any outfit whether dressed up or down.

We tell you our 5 favourite afternoon tea spots in London

We love afternoon tea.  Well, what’s not to love?  Delicate sandwiches, tasty scones with clotted cream and jam and gorgeous cakes and pastries all swilled down with tea or champagne, if you fancy it!

We’ve done a lot of hard work sampling a number of teas and have listed our London favourites:

  1. The English Tea Room at Brown’s Hotel, Albemarle Street, London: We’ve visited a number of times, just to be sure, and it’s never let us down. The gluten free option is just as amazing as the non-gluten free version.  The surroundings are just as lavish with original wood panelling, antique fireplaces and contemporary artwork.
  1. Palm Court at The Langham, Portland Place, London: This is a real hidden gem where excellent service and elegance are in equal measure. The food is always beautiful and delicious.
  1. Ting at Shangri-La, The Shard, London: We tasted both the classic and Asian-inspired versions of afternoon tea. The views of London from the 35th floor of the Shard are breath-taking not to mention the luxury of the sumptuous surroundings.
  1. The Lanesborough, Mayfair, London: This hotel offers real old school splendour. The classic tea fayre is both delectable and stunningly presented.  We just love homemade scones with homemade jam and clotted cream.
  1. The Athenaeum, Mayfair, London: We think this is another great secret. The food is both pretty and delicious.  It’s also surprisingly reasonable for the elegance of a 5-star hotel.

Now that you know where to go let’s focus on what you’re going to wear.  As with most things in life it’s all about the finishing touches so how do you accessorise your outfit?  Check out our selection of clutch, shoulder and cross-body bags for more inspiration.

We’d love to hear what you think about afternoon tea style in the comments below.

F is for Falabella: Why has this British bag become so iconic?

Stella McCartney’s Falabella bag, instantly recognisable by its braided chain, has now reached icon status.  Introduced in the Winter 2010 collection and refreshed each season it has become one of the brand’s best-selling designs.

We have a couple of bags from the Falabella family available for rent on our site – the black faux-suede Falabella shoulder bag and the grey faux-suede Quilted Baby Bella.

Stella is a life-long vegetarian so the brand does not use any leather or fur in her designs so it’s faux-leather and faux-suede all the way.

Make a statement with Lulu Guinness

If you haven’t already met, we’d like to introduce you to Eloise.  She’s a canvas shoulder bag with an eyeshadow printed scarf by Lulu Guinness.

We love a shopper and the Eloise is perfect for work, shopping or a day out, if you’re anything like us and are a girl with lots of stuff!

We love detailing and Eloise isn’t short of that.  As well as the eyeshadow printed scarf the bag has patent leather handles and trim, a Lulu Guinness logo on the back and a number of internal pockets.

Unfortunately Lulu Guinness no longer makes the Eloise bag but we’ve got one on our site for rent so why don’t you have a look?

Why we love Louis Vuitton’s signature check canvas print

Louis Vuitton’s Damier print is universally recognisable whilst being subtler than its eponymous LV initials print.

Created in 1888, the Damier brown check canvas pattern, originally bore a logo that read “marque L. Vuitton déposée”, which translated as “L. Vuitton registered trademark”.

Just over a century later, in 1998, the pattern was reintroduced as the Damier Ebène, and it has proven to be a huge success.  A number of Damier canvases have been introduced since then: Damier Azur (beige and blue), Damier Graphite (black and grey for the 120th anniversary of the canvas in 2008) and the embossed leather of Damier Infini (soft calf leather textured in the style of Damier check).

We’re fortunate to have a classic Damier Ebène Neverfull tote bag for rent on our site.  Why not check it out?
