Many designer bag lovers consider the Hermès Birkin to be the ultimate bag icon. We must confess that we’re huge fans and it tops our bag wish list. Well we can all dream, can’t we?!
As the story goes, Jean-Louis Dumas, who’d been at the helm of Hermès for five years, happened to be seated next to Jane Birkin on an Air France flight in 1983. Jane dropped her Hermès datebook, scattering its contents and stating that bags never have enough pockets! Dumas offered his assistance and introduced himself. He subsequently offered to make her dream bag for her. The finished version, named the Birkin, has since become iconic due to its design and rarity.
Over 30 years later the Birkin has been made in a variety of leathers and colours and now comes in a wide range of models. Bags have been known to change hands for tens of thousands of pounds. A rare gold and diamond encrusted Birkin was sold at auction in Hong Kong for £146,000 in 2015. The original Birkin was auctioned off at a fundraiser for earthquake victims in Taiwan.
Thierry Hermès set up his harness workshop in Paris in 1837. Hermès is now a high fashion luxury label specialising in leather, lifestyle accessories, home furnishings, perfume, jewellery, watches and ready-to-wear clothing.
