5 hacks to choose your perfect designer bag

Buying a designer bag is a big decision, in fact huge, for most of us. It’s something we may only do once in our lifetimes therefore it’s important to make the right decision.

Whenever our head gets turned by a new bag we consider the following points:

  1. Take your time: Do you really love it? If yes, ask if you can see yourself using it both now and for years to come. It may help to pull together a mood board using Pinterest or an old School pin board with cuttings.
  2. Do your research: Thanks to the internet not only can we peruse the objects of our desire including specifications, finishes, etc but it’s never been easier to find reviews of all sorts of things. Whilst there’s no substitute for getting your mitts on the bag you’re after it may be worth seeing what others have to say about it on a site such as Purse Blog.
  3. Does it have a particular purpose?: Think about how you will use it. Is it for work or everyday use or to be brought out for special occasions?  You may also want to consider how much stuff you need to carry around with you and if it will fit inside.
  4. How do you want to carry it?: Do you like to have your hands free or hold your bag? Which style best suits your needs – shoulder, backpack, cross-body or tote bag? It’s unlikely that simply being pretty will be enough.
  5. Be a savvy shopper: Once you’re sure you’ve found ‘the one’ could you pick it up cheaper? Could it be less expensive abroad, in the airport, in the sale, at a designer outlet or on a discount day such as Selfridges’ pre-Christmas 20% off promotion?  Unfortunately brands are getting wise to savvy shoppers and the bag of your dreams may only be available full price in their boutiques but we think it’s worth checking.

What’s so special about a Jimmy Choo clutch bag?

Jimmy Choo accessorised red carpet dressing before it became “a thing” and remains a favourite with celebrities and the style savvy.

Those of us who watched Sex and The City will fondly remember Carrie’s despair as she, “lost her Choo” whilst running for the Staten Island Ferry.  Jimmy Choo was a brand to covet and a pair of Jimmy Choos or one of its bags was an aspiration.

We love Jimmy Choo.  Why not check out the Jimmy Choo Tube Clutch in leopard print on our site?

F is for Falabella: Why has this British bag become so iconic?

Stella McCartney’s Falabella bag, instantly recognisable by its braided chain, has now reached icon status.  Introduced in the Winter 2010 collection and refreshed each season it has become one of the brand’s best-selling designs.

We have a couple of bags from the Falabella family available for rent on our site – the black faux-suede Falabella shoulder bag and the grey faux-suede Quilted Baby Bella.

Stella is a life-long vegetarian so the brand does not use any leather or fur in her designs so it’s faux-leather and faux-suede all the way.

Why we should all be style chameleons in 2017

In our opinion there’s nothing quite as exciting as something new, by which we mean both brand new or simply new to us.

Staying stylish can be an expensive business. But in an age where sustainability and storage are increasingly important does it make sense to own everything we use or wear, particularly if we only need it once?

A designer bag is an easy way to style any outfit but they do tend to come at a cost.  So why not rent one from someone like you?  Escape your existing wardrobe and be a style chameleon instead this year.  Our collection includes Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Chanel, Chloe, Gucci, Jimmy Choo and Mulberry.

We’d love you to share your style recommendations for 2017 with us in the comments below.

We’ve got a wide range of designer bags to help you accessorise your style including Lulu Guinness Lips Clutch in red metallic snakeskin, the Smythson Maze in mustard leather with suede trim, Charlotte Olympia Pandora in burnt orange Perspex, Anya Hindmarch Valorie in metallic glitter, Longchamp Clutch With Wrist Strap in burgundy leather and Tory Burch Kelsey in blue leather with cut our detail.

What is the ultimate bag icon?

Many designer bag lovers consider the Hermès Birkin to be the ultimate bag icon.  We must confess that we’re huge fans and it tops our bag wish list.  Well we can all dream, can’t we?!

As the story goes, Jean-Louis Dumas, who’d been at the helm of Hermès for five years, happened to be seated next to Jane Birkin on an Air France flight in 1983.  Jane dropped her Hermès datebook, scattering its contents and stating that bags never have enough pockets!  Dumas offered his assistance and introduced himself.  He subsequently offered to make her dream bag for her.  The finished version, named the Birkin, has since become iconic due to its design and rarity.

Over 30 years later the Birkin has been made in a variety of leathers and colours and now comes in a wide range of models.  Bags have been known to change hands for tens of thousands of pounds.  A rare gold and diamond encrusted Birkin was sold at auction in Hong Kong for £146,000 in 2015.  The original Birkin was auctioned off at a fundraiser for earthquake victims in Taiwan.

Thierry Hermès set up his harness workshop in Paris in 1837.  Hermès is now a high fashion luxury label specialising in leather, lifestyle accessories, home furnishings, perfume, jewellery, watches and ready-to-wear clothing.
